Taste Freedom and Raise a Toast

The big news from Breadquarters today is our new commercial relationship with Freedom Brewery.
From 1 May, Freedom will exclusively brew and sell Toast beers under a new licensing agreement, with Toast retaining ownership of our brand. Our businesses will remain distinct, independent entities, but we’ll work together to bring the same delicious range of beers to more thirsty customers than ever before, and with an even stronger sustainable impact.
A Perfect Partner
At Toast, we’ve always been about brewing great beers and spreading big ideas that can change the world. By using surplus slices to replace malted barley, not only do we make good use of the UK’s most commonly wasted food, but we also use less malt. That means less land, water, and energy is needed leaving a smaller footprint on the planet.
Since we started in 2015, we’ve crafted partnerships with other breweries, making use of spare capacity rather than setting up our own facilities. Now, we’re taking things to the next level and giving Toast a more permanent home to scale with certainty.
If you don’t already know them, Freedom Brewery has spent nearly three decades honing its craft as a leading independent British Brewery dedicated to sustainability and producing well-balanced, vegan-friendly beers.
Freedom’s commitment to low-temperature fermentation and long maturation processes results in naturally carbonated, unpasteurised lagers that burst with delicate, refined flavours. They even have their own unique water supply located beneath the brewery and they recycle all waste water through a natural reed bed filtration system – how epic is that?!
What This Means for Our Community
- The same delicious Toast beers you know and love – Still brewed with surplus bread, creating a positive impact for the planet.
- Better distribution – You’ll already find our beers in Waitrose, Co-op and Ocado, and many restaurants, hotels, and brilliant indie venues. Working with Freedom will help us get our beers into more pubs and bars nationwide where you can grab a cheeky pint.
- A stronger impact – We’re combining Toast’s bread-saving approach with Freedom’s water conservation measures and on-farm approach to waste avoidance. And we’ll continue pouring all profits into environmental charities as we grow.
What’s Next?
Our co-founders, Rob Wilson and Louisa Ziane, will continue to lead the Toast brand and champion sustainability and the circular economy. We’re working on some exciting projects to take our impact to the next level.
Our marketing manager Kristen and our Quality Director Stuart will also continue to ensure we stay still the same Toast you know and loaf.
